Welcome to the 2009 JUA Food and Culture Blog

Hello Food and Culture Group Participants
Your first assignment, prior to our trip to Boston, is to visit the following three links: Go Veg Go Green, Soup Kitchen and Chocolate. After viewing the five minute video on the Go Veg link please post thoughtful comments and formulate a couple of questions to ask our host, Jishnu Das, when we visit the Krishna Temple.

You will also be given a couple of articles about the significance of chocolate in ancient cultures and the historical development of chocolate as the food that we know (and love!) today. After visiting the Serenade Chocolatier website and reading the articles please consider what you would like to know about the production of fine chocolates or the luxury chocolate industry.

The Soup Kitchen link will take you to the opposite extreme within our culture with regard to food. Please take time to fully explore this site and post a comment. We will be visiting The Women's Lunch Place on the second day of our urban adventure. Please be prepared with thoughtful and sensitive questions.

Recall that one of our goals is to explore the limits of acceptability within our area of inquiry. As you prepare for our upcoming journey try to be aware of the varied roles that food plays within our culture.

Okay, let's get ready for a great trip!

i felt as though the concept of everyone being a vegetarian is a very good hypothetical idea, however, in reality, it would never work. it has been proven that meat is vital to a humans diet, and not enough people would stop eating meat, for any noticeable changes in the environment to actually happen.

I agree with Jonny. It might be nice to reduce meat consumption, but it isn't practical. People won't do it, or not enough will to make a difference. I sense a little bit of bias in the video as well. Not always a convincing method.

I have to agree with Alex and Jonny. It is proven that protein builds muscle and provides energy. Without meat, main source of protein, people would be a lot less energized, causing our community to be less productive.

The video is packed with enlightening information and interesting facts. Although as Jonny and Alex both stated it's not the reality. It's an attempt from vegetarians to make a relatively large scaled change from their idea of eating "too much" meat to a vegetarian based diet. I don't believe there'll be a significant amount of people to make any such difference as desired.

i agree with jonny and alex, the video has lots of eye opening fact that i did know about till i watch it. for an example that 1kg of beef is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution than driving for 3 hours while leaving all the light on in your house. if the world could cut back on the amount of beer they consume it might help reduce the co2 emission in the earth's ozone.

I dont understand why it is even the least bit necessary to reduce meat consumption. Maybe only the way we raise the animals we eventually eat.

ps. just figured ut where this thing was today

I'm very curious about the foods and experiences you have - can't wait to find out more.

I think one argument for reducing beef consumption is the huge amounts of water, grain and fossil fuels required to make it.

This link talks about some of those impacts: http://www.panda.org/what_we_do/footprint/agriculture/commodities/beef/environmental_impacts/

Meat is essential to the human diet, history has shown us. The problem with the meat in todays culture is the way it is processed. If meat is more carefully processed and the animal are exposed to free range and their own habitat, it would be most beneficial to both the animals and the consumers.

Eating meat has been around since the beginning of time and it seems unlikely that people will break this habit. I think other more reasonable steps can be taken to make the world greeener.

I agree with Justin's comment. Meat isn't the issue necessarily. It's how it's grown, processed and shipped.

I think beef raised on mega-farms is a significant issue. But it doesn't need to work this way.

Why not eat more chicken and pork? Or choose locally grown beef.

i agree with everyone meat has a great deal of nutrients and protein needed for healthy body.

Serenade chocolates was like a heaven on earth

We went to China town and we had a Dim Sum lunch. The lunch was different to ordinary "chinese food" that I usually eat. The food was both good and bad. Overall china town was a pleasurable experience.

Wouldn't chicken or pork essentially raise the same issue as beef? Any type of largely processed meat is originally going to need these "mega-farms" to keep up with the constant demand for meat.

Terre Del Sol was a a fancy french restaurant that we went to. The food at the restaurant was very good and I would deffinately go back.

We went to a Hare Krishna temple, it was pretty cool. The thing that intrigued me most about this temple was the music. They were very talented musicians with very cool instruments. One guy kept the beat with cymbals and he actually created a really cool beat.

we went to china town and some crazy ladies forced us to eat food

At the temple, we were told about the Krishna religion. they believe in karma, so they don't eat meat because killing large animals gives one lots of negative karma. Wouldn't it be easier to kill one big animal to feed 100 people than to kill 1000 plants to feed 10 people?

We went to the Krishna temple and ate a really bad bisciut and listened to bad reasons as to why it is better to be a veg.

It was really uncomfortable being in the women's lunch place because we were the only men. The women kept looking at us like we were encroaching on their territory
